Water Service Line Inventory: Meeting New EPA Requirements
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently updated its Lead and Copper Rule (LCR), mandating that all water utilities across the nation identify and document the materials of the pipes that deliver drinking water to homes and other buildings.
Following this federal directive, the City of Delaware is required to prepare and maintain a comprehensive inventory of all water service line materials for every property within the City. This crucial effort is focused on protecting public health by locating any potential lead pipes in the system.
What Does the Inventory Include?
A complete Service Line Inventory must document the material for both sections of the water service line:
- The portion owned and maintained by the utility (City of Delaware).
- The portion owned by the customer (from the property line into the building).
The inventory must also track the street address for every service line and eventually be made publicly available.
