Golf Carts on Delaware Streets: What's Legal and What's Not
There has been confusion about whether golf carts are allowed on City streets. The answer depends on how the vehicle is titled and registered with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
❌ Traditional Golf Carts and Under Speed Vehicles (USVs)
Traditional golf carts are generally not titled and are not legal to operate on City streets. A traditional golf cart is considered an Under Speed Vehicle and per state code cannot operate on any public street or highway unless local authorities have explicitly passed an ordinance granting permission. The City of Delaware does not have such an ordinance.
✅ Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs)
Some vehicles that look like golf carts are actually titled and registered as Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
If your vehicle is titled as a Low-Speed Vehicle, it may be driven on roads with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less, provided it meets all Ohio legal requirements.
To Drive a Low-Speed Vehicle Legally, You Must:
• Have a valid driver's license.
• Register the vehicle with the Ohio BMV.
• Carry required vehicle insurance.
• Display a valid license plate.
• Ensure the vehicle has all equipment required by Ohio law.
The vehicle must also follow the same traffic laws as any other motor vehicle.
Where You Cannot Drive
Whether it is a Low-Speed Vehicle or any other motor vehicle, you cannot drive or park it:
• On sidewalks.
• On multi-use paths or bike trails.
• In parks or other areas where motor vehicles are prohibited.
• Anywhere a standard passenger vehicle is not permitted.

Check your Ohio title and registration. It will identify whether your vehicle is registered as a Golf Cart/Under-Speed Vehicle or a Low-Speed Vehicle.
If you're unsure, contact the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles before operating the vehicle on public roads.

Remember
Looks can be deceiving. Just because a vehicle looks like a golf cart doesn't mean it is legal to drive on City streets. The vehicle's title and registration determine whether it may be operated legally.
