RecyclingThe City of Delaware provides several different recycling programs: Single-family homes have the option of curbside pick-up. Some apartments and condominiums also have special containers in their building for recycling.

Items placed at curbside should be sorted into two groups:

• Fiber: newsprint, phone books/magazines, paperboard/chipboard, corrugated cardboard and all types of paper. Cardboard should be broken down into 2 foot-x-2 foot bundles. Pizza boxes are fine, as long as they are free of grease and food contamination. Wax-coated cartons should be placed in a refuse bin.

• Non-Fiber: No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, glass bottles and jars, aluminum and metal (tin and steel). Wash all food waste from the containers. If containers are contaminated, place them in the refuse bin. Steel can lids have sharp edges and should be placed in the refuse bin. Styrofoam, including egg cartons, and plastic shopping bags should be placed in the refuse bin

• Recycling Bins: Replacement bins and extra bins, to make it easier to separate your fiber and non-fiber materials, are free for City residents. Phone 740-203-1810 for more information.

Yard Waste

Yard waste includes lawn trimmings, leaves, vines, brush, and garden waste. Yard waste does NOT include non-biodegradable material. The City provides this service on the scheduled refuse collection day from mid-April through mid- December.

Loose yard waste must be placed in biodegradable bags or 32-gallon containers with handles, marked for “Yard Waste” dispoBiodegradableLeafBagssal. Stickers to designate cans for yard waste are free of charge at the City Utility Office in City Hall or by contacting the Customer Service Request Line at 740-203-1810 or here. Biodegradable leaf bags may be purchased at most grocery or hardware stores.

All other yard waste must be bundled and tied with a biodegradable string in dimensions not to  exceed 4 feet in length and 18 inches in diameter and weighing less than 50 pounds. Sod is  accepted provided the bag or container and contents do not exceed 50 pounds.
