DELAWARE - It promises to be a holly, jolly evening in downtown Delaware on Friday, Dec. 7, when the community Christmas tree is lighted for the holiday season.
The tree will be illuminated during Main Street Delaware’s First Friday celebration, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The tree lighting, in memory of lifelong Delaware resident Howard Haas, will be at 7 p.m. at the community patio at William and Sandusky streets.
December’s First Friday is sponsored by Delaware County Bank & Trust Company and Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 18. The evening will feature music from the Delaware Community Chorus Carolers and Pitch Black, Ohio Wesleyan University’s female a capella group.
For this special night, Santa will be in his house at Carousel Closet, 24 N. Sandusky St., till 9 p.m., and free horse-drawn carriage rides will be available from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with boarding at Delaware County Bank, 41 N. Sandusky St. The sidewalks will be lined with hundreds of candle luminaries to add to the festive atmosphere.
For families not able to attend First Friday, Santa also will be in his house from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, and Friday, Dec. 21, as well as from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 15. Main Street Delaware will provide free carriage rides from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the two Fridays to help celebrate the season and the city.
Main Street Delaware’s First Fridays will continue on Jan. 4, 2013, for “Resolve to Get Involved.” Downtown businesses are inviting nonprofit groups and other community groups that complement their goods and services to set up inside the businesses and share information about how to get involved in Delaware during the new year. Many of the stores also will have special January sales.
“There’s so much to do in downtown Delaware,” said Frances Jo Hamilton, executive director of Main Street Delaware. “To borrow a line from one of my favorite holiday songs, ‘I’ll be home for Christmas’ and then be looking for new ways to get involved in the community during 2013 at January’s First Friday. And then in February, we’ll have our much-anticipated chocolate walk. We’re excited to share all of things with the community.”
