Only Rain Down the Drain
Sump Pumps (Ordinance 917.04)

The City of Delaware is asking residents to cooperate with the City by ensuring they are not discharging their sump pumps into the City's sanitary sewer system. During wet weather, the City can receive heavy localized rains. This may result in homes and businesses experiencing increased usage of sump pumps.

If home owners, business owners, and/or residents have their sump discharge lines attached to floor drains or otherwise connected to the City's sanitary sewer system, they can experience sanitary sewer backups. Be a good neighbor by disconnecting your sump pump discharge lines from the sanitary sewer system.

It is a violation of City ordinances 917.04 (L) to discharge "Any unpolluted water including, but not limited to, storm water, groundwater, roof runoff, subsurface drainage, pooling water or unpolluted industrial process water" into the sanitary sewer system. The City has undertaken an active sump pump discharge inspection program. Potential fines can result from violations of the ordinance.
